Mike tuck? Is he just getting a free holiday? Don't worry he's retiring at the end of the season. This is the BBL 's version of the clock golden hand shake! #joke

I've noticed that there is a lot of interest in this tournament as BBL clubs are losing players, but less interest in the GB teams (higher standard). With what is going on ref the funding, it seems that on this forum, anyway, there is little interest in what would be devastating to the sport in the UK. I did a little poll on here a while ago asking what people's preference this. Unanimously they cared more about there BBl team than anything else. A successful national team, filters down to club level. If we can not carry on with our national teams, there is zero chance of growing the BBL.
Let's not kid ourselves, it is still a really poor product, but is making little steps. So, i wonder do a lot of people on here, just not care, not bothered, as it is not the be all and end all? They get entertained enough with there BBL clubs and that's it? I want both, more so at the moment the national team, because we have the talent to really compete. Something the BBL hasn't got in abundance, anyway. It is very much each to their own, but find it a little sad that on here there is not much talk about the funding crisis.

There's a separate thread about the funding situation.
Could it be that as the England, & Scotland, teams are based on BBL players that we see every week there is more interest, and emotional involvement, that there is in the GB side that is primarily players who are making their living outside the UK with no UK coverage, so they are almost totally unknown.
Sorts fans in the UK, generally, prefer to support teams where there is continuity of playing, & coaching staff, developed over seasons. At most BBL venues it's not difficult to actually talk to the players after a game, if you want, so a bond develops between the players and supporters. Therefore, as an example, most regular Riders fans, wold be happy if Shane W and Andy T were to be confirmed as members of the England squad. Especially the fans have have got to know one or both of them at more than a superficial level, With the exception of Keiran and Gareth at Glasgow, there isn't really the same link with the members of the GB side.
(Sorry for the long post, but it was needed to fully explain my point)

So, i wonder do a lot of people on here, just not care, not bothered, as it is not the be all and end all? My take is this - While the national team is unsuccessful and low profile (and lets not kid ourselves, it has been woefully unsuccessful since the Olympics - I don't buy the 'we tried hard in a losing effort' line) then there is little connection or attraction for the general BBL fan unless there is a representative of your own team in there (AnalyticalObserver makes these points excellently above). Chicken and egg situation, I know. On paper we should not be in contention for the gold, even at CG level, unless other teams are sending weakened squads. On the other hand I love following the junior national teams where I know most of the players from the NBL competitions although we don't always get success with them either. Don't want to get into the funding crisis in detail (lets just say I think there is a big confusion between elite national team and grass roots funding) but if you are cynical like me you are also likely to be hacked off by the profligate splurging of money by the national team structures and governing bodies for very little impact or legacy and also be entitled to question why our biggest name stars are unwilling to commit to the national team (I'm making a simple point - I know the complex reasons!).

Pretty happy if that’s the squad. Fully expected Raheem to be selected as he’s better than some selected. Fully expected Devan as there’s not a lot of guards in that team. I’m guessing Connor W opted not to go or couldn’t be released.

As Connor was cut after the first training camp, it's also possible, he didn't meet the needs of the coaching team?
The squad is officially published tomorrow.

It is a possibility, The players selected will have a great experience, and have the chance to expose our sport to a mainstream TV audience, that has to be a positive on many levels.

Two good discussions happening in here. I believe that slot of bank fans are too new for the gb team and have only a distant interest in international sport.i also think the lack of risk/investment into hosting games within the UK has hindered the growth of spectator motivation to the international team. Pre and during 2012 I travelled to a few games. The qualies for moving up the divisions were spread across the UK we move forward 5/10 years we are lucky to get games outside of London. The move to qualifying for the world cup is already better, games in Leicester and Glasgow is a great start hopefully more people get behind the team.

Just to muddy the waters even more....my understanding was that the players would go out two weeks before the opening game to acclimatise. That means go out on March 21st.......and return after the finals on April 15th............that's 3.5 weeks. There is one crucial date for me March 23rd we play Rocks away I would like to see both England and Scotland both travel either before or after that game but if only England travel by then we will still have to just beat rocks regardless. Which we will have to do just to prove a point if only scotland travel by then it's a total mismatch and totally unfair being honest rocks are really going to suffer from all if this the most - april 6th gives force fans a chance to watch their team win another game!!!

Who pays the player wages whilst they are in Australia
Is it money saved by the clubs they could re-invest in cover players ?

Looking at the likely 12 I guess there’s been a gentlemans agreement to spread the load. Rocks apart but I think they’ve more than enough in the tank to cover the period.

Not that I doubt ininutes likely 12 for one let alone 23 minutes when is the squad confirmed? I thought it was meant to be yesterday. Now it’s becoming highly unlikely that we’d make the play offs I’d love our trio to be selected.

Too late, the England management have decided no Cheshire players because of your objections!

Too late, the England management have decided no Cheshire players because of your objections! I’m unsure as to how my objections have impacted the season. ?1 Did the players subconsciously play poorly to ensure it was no longer an issue as the play off spot is almost gone. A true reflection of their love of commonwealth basketball. Definitely country over club bias. ?2 How do recent performances impact on their selection? Still think it makes our league look like a mickery

As was evidenced yesterday the Rocks will have a very weak front court during the CG. Gettys should run amok.
