Hmmm, so which of the four imports is going home? Or going elsewhere in Europe? ive zero knowledge but it's possible Burnett or Martin were just with us for Europe? Can we afford them for BBL only? Will they want to stay? I guess we will find out soon enough. As it stands Trayvonn is out of the BBL squad

I'm sure you are right about Martin but he's already proved he is an upgrade on Wright and who knows whether the latter will ever regain full fitness? Personally, I'm sceptical that he will and, even if he did, I believe there's a stronger case for retaining Martin. However, Riders have said that he is a temporary replacement and perhaps they mean to honour their declared intention to put Wright back on the roster. However, given Larsson is still not the finished article (although improving slightly)and Thomson desperately needs support in the low post I would maintain that we ought to replace Wright with Martin.

Whatever happens with the imports. Once Hampton is fully fit I feel confident we can go and win some BBL trophies. In particular the league with this squad. Im sure the club will do the best they can to keep whoever they want to keep. But finances must come into it. If finances permit is there any reason we can't actually keep all four over here and de-register and re-register one as and when they get injured? Ie a spare import. They do that in British ice hockey. I have to assume there are limits on how often you can do that and also a deadline on what date you can do it until?

I think February is the last occasion to register - someone on here will know. However, I don't believe that's our best option. It'd be unsettling for both players and the team. Better to make a decision one way or the other, as long as Wright really is 100% fit. If he isn't then my head says Martin over my heart, which says Wright.

Unless the rules have changed, you can't rotate your 4 yanks. Only 3 can be registered at one time, and there's a limit to the number of changes you're allowed

I think you've hit the nail on the head regarding clubs targeting families. I detest it, and if any BBL club is serious about Europe going forwards it simply has to stop.
I don't agree with BBL clubs and Europe not mixing however - I just think this is the first step in a long journey for Riders, eventually Eagles and hopefully the likes of Lions and Flyers going forwards - lets see where we are in 3, 5, 10 years time. I think we're all critical of the BBL from time to time and rightly so but I do actually think many of the clubs in the league are in rude health and setting themselves up brilliantly for the next decade.

Someone at the club told me that the clubs we play in Europe face similar problems to us in getting fans to Wednesday night games. Obviously to a different level and extreme to us but these extra games aren't an easy sell

Slightly off topic, but anyone else think Vince Macaulay has done a great job on commentary for these Leicester home games? He clearly has a lot of respect for Riders and what they've done this season.
Obviously its not something he can do permanently, but I thought he deserved a mention. Better than any LBTV commentator at the moment, including Dan Routledge who seems to be getting a little too over excited at some Leicester games.

To be fair to Vince, if nothing else he's definitely one of the more interesting people on the UK basketball scene. I have enjoyed it when hes commentated in the past too.

You know what (sit down, I've had to), I've had petty gripes about him in the past (the fist in the air like a football celebration after every dunk was my last one I think), but I cant honestly say I've been unimpressed by anything he's done in the last 12-18 months.
He seems to have Lions right on the up. Kudos to the guy!

Unless the rules have changed, you can't rotate your 4 yanks. Only 3 can be registered at one time, and there's a limit to the number of changes you're allowed My understanding was that a club could sign as many permit players as there budget would allow (six being the maximum in any one season). For each BBL game, you may only have three permit players on the team sheet. Therefore you can rotate your permit players. Although I could be wrong......

Had a similar discussion after the Riders game on Wednesday.
Was it all worth it?
If in 5-10 years time we have one or two teams competing in Europe each season then what the Riders have done will be seen as the first step on the journey.
If what the Riders have done is a one-off..........who knows, only time will tell.
Personally I have found it a fantastic experience watching live basketball at such a high caliber. I want it to continue but there are some big issues (all of which have been previously discussed) to be resolved if we are to make this a sustainable process.
I guess it all comes down to money.

The BBL operating rules are currently (possibly unintentionally) available to the public at www.bbl.org.uk/operatingrules/ and rule 24.3 states only 3 players requiring a certificate of sponsorship can be registered at once (and only 5 non UK nationals over 18).

But yes I think Vince was great and I've tweeted him to say so. He clearly wanted Riders as a British team to do well. Im sure he's learnt an awful lot himself about what's involved in case he ever wants to take lions into Europe.

Yep but the question is can you keep registering and de-registering? And when is the last deadline for registering? If we register Trayvonn again does he count as a new player or just one of the 5 weve signed so far this season

You signed 3, one got injured, you replaced him, you'd done 4. He got recovered, and they re-registered him, you'd done your 5. May have changed. Where is Dave F?

At this precise moment in time, Forrester has got his hands full trying to beat Lions and it's looking very close indeed.

Don't get me wrong, I have nothing but respect for Dan Routledge, it's just that I find he gets a bit too excited during Riders games. Which he never did when he commentated (brilliantly) on the BBC and FreeSports games last season. As for Vince - he's a fantastic commentator. And yes, he's now see first hand what Europe competition looks like. And I suspect that's made him a little less eager to enter the Lions into it (he'd previously said that if they'd had won any silverware last season he'd seriously consider a European campaign this season).
