That thought crossed my mind, as well. When it became clear the level of investment Royals have I don't think anyone thought they'd be one and done

I read a thing on MVP that a team called Birmingham Rockets weren't joining this year. Anyone know anything about that?

So am I right or wrong that the cup games will start at the start of the season? I always feel, along with the All stars event which happens at the start of the season, that teams don’t have time to gel together especially if there’s lots of changes of players, so it’s not necessarily a true outcome of the team? For instance the all stars would be better nearer the end of the season?... That's what I assumed, but i've no evidence for thinking that. I guess it could also be run as an ongoing thing throughout the season? If the BBL plan to keep their finals in Jan, Mar and May then I guess it has to be started fairly early? There’s evidence – the BBL news article states “The 2019-20 season will begin in September with BBL Cup action as the start of the regular Championship season follows the conclusion of a new group stage… The top two in each group will host the one-legged ties in the last eight before the Semi-Finals are played over two legs to decide the two teams heading to Arena Birmingham for the Cup Finals on Sunday 26 January, 2020.”
So this reads that the Cup will start in September, and the final will still be in late January. So basically they’ve just extended the Cup’s timeframe (by starting it earlier) due to the increased number of games. It also reads that the regular season won’t start until after the group stage of the Cup has concluded… so I’d expect that to be November?

From conversations I've had today, you are correct. I'm still utterly baffled by a ten-game Cup group stage.

Its always an interesting chat what do we priorities. As fans we say the league its the footbally culture in us. The players and the clubs would probably say playoff.

I can see the Scorchers using the Cup as some kind of pre-season tournament and then large roster changes before the regular season starts.

I’d rather see things like this towards the end of the season when I know my teams formed together.

Question:-
Given the timing of the announcement, Could the BBL not trial the new playoff setup this season... just to see if it works ?
Possibly even, 2 legged Qtr's (Agg score decision) ... followed by the best of 3 in the Semi's ... just a thought ?

Guessing not with short venue booking times.
Could there be more teams to be announced?

Guessing not with short venue booking times. Could there be more teams to be announced? I agree, too short notice to hire some venues now for this to be done this season. Regarding the number of teams, the news article explicitly says there’ll be 12 teams in the BBL next season. I guess that could change, but they’re clearly expecting 12 teams again next season (otherwise why mention it).

Whilst I agree that the Cup having 60 games to eliminate 4 teams seems really excessive, it has occurred to me that the currently Championship/Play-Off format esstailly has 198 games to elimate 4 teams. I suppose the argument is that there’s 2 titles to be won in that process.

This just happened between Solent and Worthing. It came down to match points and because Solent won their last game against Essex they won the league. No. Solent won the league because they beat Worthing on the head-to-head aggregate score. They didn't arrive at Brentwood knowing they had to beat us by a certain margin. There's a huge difference I was under the impression that is Solent lost that game Worthing would have won the league as they had the same amount of wins and losses going into the game.

That thought crossed my mind, as well. When it became clear the level of investment Royals have I don't think anyone thought they'd be one and done there’s a rumour some players haven’t been paid for 2months!!!

After numerous conversations today I currently feel a bit more at ease about the changes.
Depending on the trophy draws teams will still have 16 or 17 minimum home games with the potential of more being added depending on play off home court advantage. This means that season ticket prices will not need to be slashed and clubs won’t loose too much revenue.
I did wonder if it would be better to swap the cup and trophy finals over and spread the cup games out over a few months. Giving teams more of an opportunity to settle in new players. Smaller clubs will be at a disadvantage right at the beginning of the season due to not being able to retain players.
I’ve said for the last two years having an all star tournament at the beginning of a season based on the season before standings, especially when most of last seasons players won’t be in the league or at the same club, is silly.
I guess we just have to sit and wait now to hear how this mini Cup League is going to run and how the teams will be split.

I like the idea of swapping the cup and the trophy over. I wonder if it was ever mooted.

There's a huge difference I was under the impression that is Solent lost that game Worthing would have won the league as they had the same amount of wins and losses going into the game. If Solent lost at Essex they would have finished with 5 losses to Worthing's 4. Therefore Worthing would have won the league. However they both finished with 22 wins and 4 losses. So it came down to the head to head result. Solent beat Worthing by about 11. Worthing beat Solent by 1. Therefore Solent had the head to head result. Nothing to do with overall points difference whatsoever, the scoreline against every other team was entirely irrelevant. Only the wins/losses and the head to head result between Worthing and Solent mattered.

To be fair the press release said 12 teams, didn't say which 12. Also why hasnt Ashley Hamilton been playing as of late???

Highest possible number of home games in a season has actually increased from 25 to 26.
