Just watched the lovely Ovie from Love Island who suggested he will be playing in England this season.
Royals? Lions? Riders?
Anyone heard?

Probably just maximising the money he can earn from love island this year before going back abroad

Can't see him at any club except a London-based one.

Would definitely make financial sense for him to stay in the UK for a year or two.
Not for basketball reasons obviously - he'll piss this league with his eyes closed - but he'll have marketing opportunities galore.

Royals have been teasing some ‘really exciting’ news for this week - maybe a coincidence, maybe not?
Agree if he does stay in the UK it’ll probably be a London club, to better balance with his media commitments/opportunities.

Scorchers would be brilliant for him - basically London and he can prove how great a player he is by carrying a whole franchise...

Doubt so IRF, itll all be about who gives him more freedom Both I imagine Doubt money will be much of a factor at all. He will probably earn a million quid off the back of Love Island and will need flexibility to pursue other projects away from basketball. Whichever team offers him that will be where he signs.

Is the guy any good or are people just overrating him because he's been on that crappy show and you know whoever signs him will milk it

He's a legit ACB starter and played in the Champions league last season.
He'd be the best player over here by a distance Id imagine.

Best Small forward for sure. Massive coup if true, however, i imagine if he hadn't gone on Love Island, this discussion is dead. That 15 mins of fame has paid for him to have a season in his home town

Can't see it being anyone except Royals, the only ones with the budget for him, probably use the budget they had for MBA.

I think you're underestimating your club. The Box makes him look a lot more like a pro than Palace. And if he wants to be a star , his basketball earnings will only be a small proportion of what he brings in.

First time I’ve read this thread because last night some Aston Villa fans in a bar in Spain mentioned Ovie to me. I was commiserating with them after Spurs had “thrashed” them and they asked if I played football and I said basketball. Now usually that conversation goes something like this. Me “I play basketball” Non basketball person “oh. I played that at school once” Me “oh really?” (Feigning interest” Them “it’s not that popular in the UK is it?” Me “sadly not” They will usually accompany the conversation with some imaginary “shots” when they say the word basketball.....you know the type of shot I mean......the kind that everyone who doesn’t play basketball tries when they find themselves with a ball in front of a hoop. If I’m really lucky they may recall watching the Harlem Globetrotters!!
However back to the bar in Spain Them “Basketball? Ovie from Love Island plays basketball! He’s really lovely, really genuine. Nicest guy on the show” Me (proud non watcher of Any celebrity wannabe TV show) “That’s nice” Them “what team does he play for? We were hoping we might be able to catch him at a game versus our local team” Me “errr. Did you play basketball at school then?”
So well done Ovie. Most of these shows are desperate for celebrities now so all BBL clubs should get their best looking, most likeable players front and centre. Even QofS for gods sake! Have you seen that recently? They will literally take anyone who has played sport (probably be a steady stream of net ballers though on their for the next year or so as it’s a really up and coming sport you know........).
As for where Ovie should go...clearly Eagles. He can link up with the Geordie Shore brigade for a love island cross over episode!

4 teams who have barely announced any players so far this off season that could be holding out to see whether they can get this deal over the line - Royals, Lions, Scorchers & Eagles? The two London clubs would be the obvious place for him and he fits exactly into the model that the Royals are looking to build - GB international etc. I'm not sure Surrey could afford him, and Eagles, well we aren't in the South East. Time will tell.

For me, Royals should be doing everything they can to get this deal done. They need to find a way of filling that venue and it may be that attracting non-basketball fans is the best way to do that (lowering their ticket prices would also help). Who knows, people who have never watched basketball may go simply to see "Ovie from Love Island" and get hooked on the whole game experience and return again and again. On the other hand, they might visit the dated Crystal Palace once and think that was one time too many.

Still say they wont be here in 4 years time (it was 5 last year!)

It's clear that sponsorship and benevolent financial backing or investment is more important to them right now than ticket income Of course in the future they will need ticket income as well

Even being allowed to have 2 higher paid Brits on top of the 200K team cap that www.hoopsfix.com/2018/10/bbl-salary-cap/ says, would the Royals be able to have Lawrence and MBA and Ovie and stay within the cap, never mind Hamilton as well?

I don't think anyone throws this kind of m9bey at such a venture without hoping that one day - as a bare minimum - it'll break even
