Blimey. I'm no fan of Wolves but this is terrible.

Yikes. I always thought Worcester were one of the more professional set-ups in the BBL (based on nothing really other than they had a nice arena with good crowds).
Gutted for their fans.

Very sad news but as the statement says no crowds means no revenue and sponsors are also having to pull their oars in to stay afloat. Im sure they will be back in the future but at the moment it's clearly not financially sustainable. It also demonstrates just how tight the margins must be when you consider that the previous season every game was a virtual sell out. NBL and rebuild from there.

If you take the press release as accurate this isn’t very impressive.
1. They just had taxpayers money for a year to keep going through the pandemic only to stop after it. 2. They were nowhere near the bottom of the table for budgets last year so whilst sponsor money would have been down they could have cut their cloth accordingly 3. Disappointing that after 15 years still dependent on uni money. As happened with Leeds the problem with uni franchises is that they can be gone at the stroke of a pen.

Blimey. Bolt from the blue. For what seemed a stable franchise to disappear must send shockwaves across the league. But as Dave said, an inherent risk of a Uni franchise and not bring core business.

The Worcester Raiders? Make sure Enver doesn't find out there's a suitable venue available

A 10 team league will be a joke. I hope that’s not still the case for long

A 10 team league will be a joke. I hope that’s not still the case for long Sweden's league has only 9 teams, meaning literally *one* team doesn't make it for the Playoffs. Really hope this doesn't happen elsewhere in the league...

Seems a smart decision faced with highly uncertain ticket revenue, severely impacted sponsorship money and facing costs of operating a team. Why is this a surprise? Wouldn’t be surprised if a few more teams press the pause button or withdraw. Simple economics.

Not surprised, many proffesional/semi proffesional sports clubs in exactly the same situation.

They have their own use of an arena. Their operating costs are going to be towards the bottom of the league.
We are looking at a late September start. Plenty of time to look at the Covid situation between then and now. If fans were still restricted then (which is unlikely) the league could move back a few weeks without issue. My view is that there is likely to be an attendance bounceback as people look forward to attending live sport again.
All players will be out of contract. They could reduce their wage budget for next year in accordance with sponsors issues. No way the entry is unviable, this smacks of a decision taken by the university. Look at the lack of urgency in getting imports in last season, it’s likely that this decision was in the offing then. The simple financial argument for me does not stack up.

Well Glasgow cut their costs and carried on. And they had venue costs. Does smack of wanting rid of the franchise

Talk us through how last season didn't happen. Because you promised us it wasn't going to happen. Some thoughts.

They were a popular club locally and most matches were a sell out. Drinks and food stalls always busy, so they had some good income pre covid...which would continue after this lockdown is over Cant believe this tbh.

Talk us through how last season didn't happen. Because you promised us it wasn't going to happen. Some thoughts. You really are a piece of work aren’t you? You don’t know why Worcester have left and I doubt any of us ever will read a truthful public explanation. There will undoubtably be NDAs in place which prevent either side disclosing why this parting of ways has occurred. This simply doesn’t add up and your rant about the organisation taking the government money and running seems way off the mark to me. This is probably more to do with a refusal to bow down to the proposed almighty 777 takeover, than financial reasons and I doubt Worcester will be the only club to do this. The BBL is at a crossroads and I genuinely hope it survives. Unlike you, who seem to thrive on clubs leaving the BBL. You spout off (your often offensive BS) as if you are the fountain of all knowledge. Grow up man and get a life. There are many Worcester supporters, myself included, who have been rocked by this news today. Staff, players and coaches who we have got to know over the many years we have followed the club home and away have probably lost their jobs. The affinity the 2000 fans who filled the arena every week had with the coaches and the players was huge - this is an extremely well supported club we are talking about here (no wonder you are jealous and bitter), not some tinpot organisation with creaking bleachers to accommodate a couple of hundred supporters. The arena won’t sit empty, by the way, it is not just used for BBL basketball, it is in constant use for multiple purposes. Super league netball, wheelchair basketball, WNBL basketball, BUCS basketball, conferences, exhibitions… As long as little Dave gets to have his spiteful digs though (on his sad little blog which I just had to look at for the first time in 12 months just to see what bitter and twisted drivel you had penned)…you sad, sad man. PS - Admin can ban me for daring to call out the almighty Hersey, for all I care, he ruins (or should that say runs) this site for many people, that’s why they don’t post anymore.

Was really surprised to read this disappointing news. I thought Wolves would be able to ride out the storm. Feel for their fans. Let's hope they return soon to the BBL. If they can't make it work then it surely means others are very vulnerable as well.
