At the 'Taylor Classic' preseason tournament in Worthing.
Thames Valley just beat a slightly shorthanded Reading Rockets team missing a couple of key players including their new big.
I don't know if Cavaliers had a full team as they haven't announced anything. Difficult to judge Reading, they looked OK, Jaz Bains was very good for then. And their American wing looked very capable, but never took over they game. They definitely missed having a proper big.
TV's no.21 looked very good and ultimately they outworked Reading and shot the ball a bit better.
Interested to see how Thunder look in the next game.

AJ Basi was great, Reading were better than a 12 point loss. 3 US fouls in a friendly, good opening match though. I reckon Thunder will win today but who knows.

Worthing won comfortably against Barking Abbey, who looked as they always do. Athletic, young and full of energy.

John Hobbs said in the commentary that TVC had signed AJ Roberts who wasn't playing today. Also Sylla wasn't playing today but is back apparently.

Reading dispatched of Barking Abbey with relative ease. Thames Valley are going to be quite the challenge for Thunder, too much maybe. #3 Hafeez Abdul is the real deal for Thunder, he was great yesterday. A few other good new additions this season too, should be even stronger when a couple more arrive.

And, obviously, there was thisHafeez looked very good in both games. And feels like be can be a good go to scorer on a team that looks like its not going to be short of offensive firepower. Thunder beat TVC in the final by 4. Good atmosphere at the Thunderdome. It felt like we were missing a true big, but apparently Howard Crawford is coming back so that should sort that out. Thunder look good this year. Looks like we'll be in a race for second place though which TVC will be competing in, as will Reading.

There are 4-5 teams with the talent to win the league if they can put everything together. Certainly I don't think scoring will be a problem for Thunder or Cavaliers but will they put the work in on the defensive end? Rockets and Storm will be better in that regard.

Having said that I wasn't going to write about D1 this season, I've knocked out a report about the Taylor Classic. I clearly can't be trusted, although i did have ulterior motives (he said mysteriously)

19/20 top scorer Elliott Sentance has returned to Kestrels after a season in the BBL with Plymouth. TBF he made less impact at Raiders than I expected...

It takes some ego to name a tournament after yourself and I'm here for it

Martyn Gayle has signed for Newcastle uni. Had half hoped we’d see him sign back in Brum.
Although Rockets have announced his brother, 37 year old Michael of Knights and Worcester fame.

So, very quietly the season actually starts tonight as Essex Rebels host London Lions II in Group 1 of the L Lynch trophy. Any thoughts, predictions?

So, very quietly the season actually starts tonight as Essex Rebels host London Lions II in Group 1 of the L Lynch trophy. Any thoughts, predictions? Well we are talking about two of the academy/uni sides and they don't generally "do" media. It, along with a review of the Taylor Classic, were mentioned on their website. I don't think BE are ever going to promote this big-time, certainly not during the group stage when they're sorting out all of the issues that arise in the weeks leading up to the season starting. BE's coverage of the group stage was provided by a shadowy figure connected to a D1 club, and the clubs need to replace him if they're want to keep the sponsors happy with some publicity. Their former (unofficial) press officer now writes blogs about the strange situation where one club has two teams in the same group on the same competition. Link corrected. One day I'll get the hang of this.

Probably the most interesting team to look at in the early running...

The big tip off is today with six L Lynch games. I'll be here If you look carefully you might see me, kicking back, enjoying my retirement, possibly with a pint of Aspall. Elsewhere Derby host Bradford (Nigel hurts me if I don't publish his previews), Hemel against Cavs looks a bit tasty but the biggie is undoubtedly Thunder versus Kestrels.

We (Div 2 Rockets) have a sell out first pre season game today against West Sussex Wolves (women) followed by the men against St Helens.
Admittedly it’s free admission today. But still a fantastic start for the club
