“We are in the process of examining the viability of the club in the current season, and this has resulted in us unable to put a game on tomorrow."
That's sad to see. Very worrying for everyone involved in the club. No doubt players will be left out of pocket and stranded unless they've got a bit of money saved up.

CLUB STATEMENT: SURREY SCORCHERS GAME
DECEMBER 27, 20191670 Please see the below statement from London City Royals Chairman Jon Sawyer regarding the scheduled game against Surrey Scorchers, tomorrow, Saturday 28th December.
“It is with deep regret that London City Royals is going to have to postpone the game against Surrey Scorchers tomorrow.
“We are in the process of examining the viability of the club in the current season, and this has resulted in us unable to put a game on tomorrow.
“We will keep you all updated on our situation in the next few days.
“May I thank you for your support. We have been ambitious in our goals for the team, the outreach community work and our vision for our team as being a real force for social change. This is against a backdrop of basketball being recognised as increasing in popularity and the sport being acknowledged to deliver real social impact, especially for those most in need in London. However, the financial support for the sport has been very difficult to find.
“We hope to be making a further update in the next 7 days. For those who have purchased tickets for the game on the 28th – these tickets will be valid for a new date (subject to confirmation by the BBL). If you require a full refund please advise by return.
“Once again I do apologise for having to postpone the game tomorrow and trust all our Royals fans do understand the reasons for this.”
Regards,
Jon Sawyer Chairman

Shocking that a business is finding it difficult to run by spending silly amounts and not having any money coming in... Who knew?!

Makes an absolute mockery of our beloved sport and league. 90% of the community predicted this.
May I remind you that even my beloved Knights completed every game and season!

Just goes to show what a mess this league can be at times.
IF they fold before the end of the season then what happens?
I was going to say more but not going to risk it.

...yeah, looks horribly like the proverbial fat lady is warming up for her act. Gutted for what it means for the game in the capital and for those involved in trying to build the club. I really hope they find some way through, but knowing how hard investment can be for basketball to find I’m struggling to see it at this point. Regarding what happens with the league if the worst should happen, I think I’m right in saying when the original Giants folded a few games into the season their results were expunged? Royals’ Cup results will probably stand, but the one league game they’ve managed will just be scrubbed and the league drops to 11 teams. www.mvp247.com/2019/12/royals-not-viable/

At this point I think the best outcome for the league would be Royals confirming their departure within the next couple of days. While mid season departures are always disruptive a team leaving now wouldn't be terrible due to the few league games played so far (and this may turn out to be the biggest benefit, albeit unintended, of the cup games being played in a lump at the start of the season). Any credibility that the Royals' had as a professional organisation has gone out of the window with their recent off the court issues and quite frankly at this point I doubt any team would bet on Royals turning up even if they said they were in a position to continue. Furthermore, whatever happens in the next couple of weeks it is very difficult to see Royals' surviving beyond the end of the season, and in many ways a quicker departure may well be of benefit to Lions who are also said to be struggling financially so if Royals' hang on til the end of the season they may well take Lions down with them.

Can't see those two adding to their air miles any more. i hope the BBL are quick to get their trophy back before its melted down for scrap value.

Sad situation but it shows how profligate the club were in terms of spending, especially last season. BBL has to be much more rigorous when admitting clubs to the top tier. Fewer teams would mean any league losses are even more costly - not great for those teams like Riders who have already lost a game.
Not overly confident about our prospects tonight against the Rocks but that's nothing new!

I'm not sure how this joins up. Do you think fans and sponsors are currently giving money to Royals which they would instead give to Lions?

Could be an element of that but the bigger benefits will be to do with the availability of Palace if the issues with the Copper box reoccur (and may even prevent them reoccurring in the first place) and also the increased ability to control the pricing and discounting tactics of tickets to basketball in London for the more casual fan who doesn't care which team they are watching (£5 off never looks as good if the store down the road is offering £10 off) .

Not overly confident about our prospects tonight against the Rocks but that's nothing new! How long would a Leeds force under Matt Newby survived on what they have pissed away? BAM and Hamilton are good players but way overpaid in bbl terms. Williams as a rookie coach owed significant amounts beggars belief. I always thought it was built on sand but assumed there were funds to cover it for a few years. I guess that’s stupidly naive. I’d love to see their business model and how they thought it was sustainable. Give me a Bristol flyers any day

Hate to say I told you so. No you dont lol I mean I dont think it was hard to see coming, but at the same time there will inevitably be a loss of jobs to backroom staff players and Lloyd Gardner who gave up a good gig at Barking Abbey to take the job. I dont think thats comfortable for anyone.

I guess it was time for Lloyd to give it a go elsewhere. His coaching there hasn't hurt his rep. I guess the academies they had links with will still need a decent coach.
I can't be arsed to gloat or search for links to prove I "told you so" about Royals. So inevitable, but I guess the BBL needed the franchise fee and - to be fair - if it'd worked it could have been very good for the BBL.
Back to 11 teams playing each other thrice next season.

Meanwhile their website still claims that the game is still on.
Crap to the end.

Wonder what will happen in the Trophy if the Royals were to drop out of the league in the next few days? Would Scorchers get a bye, or would they try to find another invitee at short notice?
