Competing this year – London Lions, Leicester Riders, Newcastle Eagles, London City Royals, Sheffield Sharks, Glasgow Rocks, Cheshire Phoenix and Surrey Scorchers.
The event will take place on Sunday 13th October at the Copper Box Arena in London’s Queen Elizabet Olympic Park from 1pm until 6pm. Live coverage of the full 5 hours will be broadcast on Sky Sports Arena and Sky Sports Mix (available to all Sky customers) in the UK, and internationally via multiple broadcasters including DAZN in Germany, Italy, Japan and Canada.
I’m really looking forward to this, it’s fast become one of the best days out in the british basketball season for me. I’m not saying the gravitas of winning this title comes close to winning the Cup, Trophy, Championship or Play-Off titles, but it’s a really enjoyable day out and a great way of seeing multiple games and multiple teams in a single day in one arena. I also believe it’s probably the best event of the season in terms of publicising the league, with plenty of media coverage and 5 hours of live television coverage both in the UK and around the world. And being run by Matchroom Sport I also believe it’s probably the most financially profitable event for teams and/or the BBL too with £100K of prize money.
Anyone else going and/or looking forward to it?

Not booked tickets yet, but certainly looking forward to it. It's not like traditional basketball but it's a fun afternoon & it's really good to see so many teams in the same day. I know we'll get all the doom & gloom merchants on here complaining it's not basketball and they'd never go but you have to accept it for what it is. It's a good day out, it's on Sky, it's fun and fast & gets better media coverage than anything else BBL related. At least until Ovie signs for Lions!!!

I'm going (on a press pass). It's basketball (just), I can tolerate it once a year though I missed last year. It bring some cash in, though I'm told it £67k & some goes to the BBF

I'm going (on a press pass). It's basketball (just), I can tolerate it once a year though I missed last year. It bring some cash in, though I'm told it £67k & some goes to the BBF £25,000 for the winner. £20,000 for the runner up. £12,5000 for the semi-finalists. £10,000 for one win. £5,000 for no wins. By my calculations that £70,000 amongst the top 4 teams… and then I guess what the other 4 get depends on how many games they win before they’re knocked out, but I’d say £100,000 total sounds about right? I’m not saying that £100K going directly to the teams, we discussed this before and I know it’s said the teams have to give some of that to the BBL, but it’s still £100K going directly into the pockets of the BBL and its teams. I know they might have to give some of that to the BBF, but couldn’t that be said about any money the BBL generates? I’d be surprised if the Cup, Trophy or Play-Off finals are quite as profitable for the BBL and the teams involved as the All-Stars Championship.

I think its the most important tournament of the year... You’re being sarcastic, right? But although, as I’ve said, it doesn’t have the gravitas of the Cup, Trophy, Championship or Play-Off titles I’d happily argue that it is the most important tournament of the year in terms of growing the BBL’s coverage and popularity.

I'll be there (second time). I do think it can work well to drag in people who wouldn't normally go to a BBL game. I'm going with the same friend I went with last time, who'd be very unlikely to go to a standard one-off game, and this time we're taking his son as well. The issue is turning those people into fans who then would go to normal games. These events need to come with the hard sell for more regular BBL competitions, and as much interaction and connection with the fans as they can come up with. Yes, it's all a bit nuts, but I'm sure people drawn to Twenty20 cricket have become test fans, and people who enjoyed the speed and excitment of sevens rugby moved on to watch the 15-a-side game. Just getting people in the doors can be a good first step.

Haven't been before, mainly 'cos we haven't qualified but travelling down for this one. Agree it's not true basketball but probably a bit more exciting than watching the Nix in the first few games of this season anyway. However full of confidence based on the performance of Scorchers last season!!! Come over to the Nix section to say hello anyone wanting a chat.

Doubt I'll ever go. Doesn't appeal to me to watch lots of short games. If I wanted to do that I'd go to Quai 54 in Paris as it has a bit of a specific atmosphere, culture and status along with it.

Just another Hearn gimmick like the daft snooker shootout I've been to that too, and it can also be a lot of fun. It's obviously not the 'purest' form of the game, but it can still be entertaining and of value to the sport.

Surely we should just see it for what it is - a bit of fun and a grand day out.
I went to the first one at the O2. It was a great day and a good opportunity to see all the teams in a day. And quite relaxing watching some games that really didn’t matter to me.
Can’t go this time, but not because I’m boycotting it.
Would we be so snotty if the winners took home a million?

Exactly, it’s great publicity for the league, a fun day out, and probably brings more money into the league than any other single event each season. Hosting it at the Copper Box Arena is much better than the O2 in my opinion. Last year the Copper Box Arena was almost sold out (compared to a half-empty O2 the previous year) and the atmosphere was much better. Despite not really being targeted at existing hard core basketball fans, I’ve noticed more and more of these people admitting they actually really enjoy the event. Last year at the event I heard a few people, presumably newcomers, saying they should go to more basketball games. So if the inclination is there it’s critical the BBL, and I guess the London teams in particular, capitalise on this opportunity.

I’m hoping the draw is announced sometime this week, I think it’s normally publicised a few days beforehand. What with the tournament consisting of 12 minute games performing under pressure is critical (no points for stamina here!) which is advantageous for some teams and a disadvantage for others. Based on that, any predictions on who might do well in this competition? Personally I think the format will compliment Royals quite well…

I'll watch it because it all takes place in a day and games come thick and fast. However, I don't like the gimmicky rules so for me it's just an add-on that I wouldn't miss if it never happened again.

Please let someone else ( from the Southern cup group) have the pleasure of going against them. It's nice to watch Fletcher and his moves but not again please please!!!

I get what you’re saying, but I highly suspect the draw will be done at random given the event is independent of the official BBL competitions, and let’s be honest, probably aimed slightly more at the casual basketball fan than us hard core ones. Which works for me, as I’m hoping we can avoid Riders and Eagles in the early stages!
